This half-day short course covers a broad range of topics related to construction dewatering and will acquaint you with factors to be considered in designing, permitting and operating a dewatering system.  Some case studies will be reviewed to illustrate both successful and unsuccessful construction dewatering applications.

This half-day course takes a rigorous yet practical approach towards the diagnosis of aquifer response and the estimation of representative aquifer properties from pumping tests. The lectures and discussion are designed to go beyond the nuts-and-bolts of aquifer test interpretation and address concepts of critical thinking in the interpretation of pumping tests. The course is not devoted to any particular computer-assisted interpretation package, but such methods will be used to demonstrate some of the concepts.

 

SC10: Using Settle3 for Settlement, Wick Drain, Liquefaction and Ground Improvement Analysis

The workshop’s objective is to help participants perform settlement, wick drain, ground improvement and liquefaction analysis using the Rocscience program, Settle3. The workshop participants will learn to use Settle3 to solve everyday settlement problems through practical cases.

The workshop will start with the settlement analysis of a power plant constructed on a raft foundation. The site geology will comprise multiple soil layers of varying properties, the parameters of which come from in-situ standard penetration and cone penetration tests and laboratory experiments. The modelling will involve initial excavation of unsuitable material, followed by constructing a compacted high-quality fill layer and then the raft foundation.

The workshop will then tackle a practical example involving a thick, weak, compressible clay layer in the soil profile. It will model the acceleration of settlements that can be attained with wick drains, based on empirical methods implemented in Settle3. As part of the modelling, workshop participants will discuss the selection of various wick drain input parameters.

Lastly, the workshop will look at the case of a site with a thick, loose, sandy layer in the soil profile, which is prone to liquefaction. Participants will first learn to import CPT data on the site into Settle3 and then conduct liquefaction analysis of the foundation sand layer. They will proceed to analyze ground improvement mitigations for the case, including vibro-compaction and stone columns.

 

SC11: Introduction to in-ground instrumentation and INSAR-based geotechnical monitoring

This short course will offer key insights on several topics pertaining to geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring. Starting from the basics of metrology and building up to modern remote data collection methods, this course will cover many key topics relevant to geotechnical engineers. The following topics will be discussed and supplemented with relevant examples and case studies drawn from our experience:

  • Metrology

  • In-ground Instruments: Piezometers and In-Place Inclinometers

  • Data Acquisition Systems

  • Remote Sensing Technologies: INSAR

 

This short course will help professionals familiarize themselves with the specifics of monitoring. It will grant them a better understanding of some of the intricacies of monitoring and how it ties in to the geotechnical engineers’ work.
